Young Composers Workshop

an engine for the music of tomorrow

The Young Composers Workshop admits pre-college and undergraduate composition students annually via application. Each participant receives lessons, lectures and mentorship from the faculty and Festival artists.

Participants will compose a new chamber work. The piece will be workshopped and professionally recorded by Sunset ChamberFest’s renowned performers.

Curriculum

All admitted young composers receive:

  • Two 1-hour private composition lessons before the festival

  • One 30-minute workshop rehearsal of student’s piece as well as the opportunity to watch other rehearsals

  • One 60-minute rehearsal session with performing artists after initial workshop

  • A professional recording of student’s piece

  • Discussion with festival performing artists on extended techniques, career development, and approaches to musicianship

  • Lectures from widely-acclaimed composition faculty

  • Recognition of participation in all festival performances

The cost of attending the Young Composers Workshop in 2022 is $1000.
