Victor Shlyakhtenko, 14, is a well rounded musician who has been studying piano at the Colburn Community School of Performing Arts in Los Angeles, CA under the direction of Teresa de Jong Pombo since the age of five; studying violin with Tamara Chernyak since the age of seven and studying music theory and composition with Douglas Dutton since the age of 10. Victor is a member of the award-winning Almevi Piano Trio and was the concertmaster of the Colburn School’s String Ensemble during their 2013-14 season. His musical experience also includes three years of orchestra and seven years of choral singing.
Victor was named a finalist in the orchestral division of the 2015 National Young Composers Challenge. His compositional experience covers various styles and techniques, including chorales, inventions and sinfonias, fugues, as well as works for solo piano, chamber music and orchestral/choral compositions.
An accomplished pianist, Victor is the winner of many local and state competitions including the CAPMT State Concerto and State Honors Auditions (2014), the Elvin S. McGaughey Music Foundation’s Glendale Piano Competition (2015), Southwestern Youth Music Festival (2014, 2015), the Robert Turner Piano Concerto Competition (2015), MTAC Orange County West Piano Solo Competition (2011, 2013, 2014) and the Southern California Junior Bach Festival (2012-2015).
Victor has appeared as a soloist with the Orange County Symphony (2nd and 3rd mvts of Mendelssohn’s Piano concerto No. 1), the Los Angeles Doctor’s Symphony Orchestra (1st mvt of Chopin’s Piano concerto No. 1) and the Boulder Chamber Orchestra (Piano Concerto in A minor by Grieg, complete).
Victor is a recipient of the Merit Scholarship at the Colburn Community School of Performing Arts and is on the Young Artist Roster at the Classics Alive Foundation.
