Sequoyah Sugiyama, 18, is a Herbert Zipper Scholar at the Colburn Community School of Performing Arts where he studies viola with John Hayhurst and composition with Dr. Bruce Miller. He is principal violist of the Colburn Chamber Orchestra, assistant principal violist of the American Youth Symphony, and a member of the Young Artists Symphony Orchestra viola section. Sequoyah has been accepted into the Los Angeles Philharmonic Associate Composers Program two years in a row. In late 2015, he was awarded an Honorable Mention in the composition division of the YoungArts Foundation. In 2013, he was named a winner in the National Young Composers Challenge. Sequoyah’s original works have been performed by members of the Orlando Philharmonic and the Colburn Chamber Orchestra and at festivals such as Center Stage Strings and Montecito International Music Festival.
