Max Chan - Young Composer

Composer and oboist, Max Chan is a high school senior at Canyon Crest Academy in San Diego, California.  Max is 1st Chair Oboe in Canyon Crest Academy's Wind Ensemble and plays in the San Diego Youth Symphony Conservatory Ovation Program.  Max was selected as 1st Chair Oboe All-District Honor Band for the last 4 years.  Max has studied Oboe under Steve Kramer for 6 years and played in master classes with Sarah Skuster, Principal Oboe for the San Diego Symphony.  

Inspired by a music exploration trip to Salzburg, Vienna and Munich, Max has been composing music for 3 years and is studying with USC Composition Professor Sean Friar.  He has attended San Francisco Conservatory masterclasses led by Fifth House Chamber Ensemble composers Austin Wintory and Dan Visconti. Max’s orchestral and ensemble works have been performed by professional and graduate level musician, as well as his high school and youth symphonies. In addition, Max composes for video games and student produced films in his high school Envision program.  Max was awarded a merit scholarship to Brevard Music Institute’s Composition Program and attended last June. He plans to major in Music Composition in the fall.

When not playing or writing music, Max enjoys pole vaulting, gaming competitions and making puns.
