Maia Thomas is a Freshman at the University of Southern California Thornton School of Music, where she studies music composition with Ted Hearne. As a Cinematic Arts minor, she combines her passion for film, visual arts and music by composing for student productions. Thomas has been a member of the Music Teachers Association of California’s Young Composers Guild since 2015, for which she performed her piano- cello duet “Itazurakko”. She earned a Certificate of Merit with Honors for Piano Level 9 in 2014. She began independently composing in elementary school, during which she also first began taking piano lessons. Thomas is currently orchestrating her completed sextet “Kurashiki In Summer” for wind ensemble and percussion, which will be read for New Music for Wind Ensemble (NMWE). In February of this year, she performed at the Thornton Electroacoustic Showcase, directed by Eric Pham; Thomas is an active member of Laptop Ensemble, for which she is currently engaged in a compositional collaboration with Dan Caputo and Ryan McWilliams.
