Benjamin Chilton - Viola
Benjamin Chilton, 21, is from Dallas, Texas. He began playing viola at the age of 16, after studying violin for five years. Having been awarded the full-tuition Olivia Juliet Hedges Endowed Music Scholarship, he recently completed a Bachelor’s of Music degree at the University of Southern California where he studied with professors Che-Yen Chen and Don McInnes. In the Fall of 2017, he will begin a Master’s of Music program at the Colburn School under the tutelage of Paul Coletti. Benjamin has performed in many concerts across the United States and Europe, including a performance on NPR’s From the Top with the Dallas Symphony and as a soloist with Culver City Symphony as a winner of the 2013 Parness Concerto Competition. Benjamin has also been named 2nd Place in the National American String Teachers Association competition in the Senior Viola division and been featured on the cover of The Strad magazine’s Summerplus Edition. In addition, he regularly plays contemporary music in Los Angeles with ensembles such as USC Thornton Edge Ensemble along with local jazz ensembles. In 2015, Benjamin was part of the featured quartet on Dynamic Films’ score to An Act of Love. Benjamin has also been a fellow at the Music Academy of the West as well as of the featured quartet of the Rencontres Franco Americaines Festival in Missillac, France, where he performed alongside luminaries such as Jeremy Denk and François Salque, respectively.
