A Freshmen at Westlake High School, Aidan Vass (14) enjoys both classical and jazz studies.  An accomplished trumpeter, Aidan has held seats for multiple years in the Ventura County Honor Band,  All Southern Jazz Band and CBDA All-State Jazz band. After winning the young soloist award at the Newbury Park Jazz Festival, he was awarded a scholarship to attend the Idyllwild Summer Jazz Program in 2016. He returned to Idyllwild (again with a scholarship) in the Summer of 2017. It was at Idyllwild where he began studies in Jazz composition with his current instructor, CSUN Jazz studies chair,  Matt Harris. Not content to focus solely on jazz, Aidan has an insatiable appetite for classical music. He studies classical guitar and after just two years of classical piano study, Aidan will test for MTAC Level 9 Certificate of Merit this Spring. After quickly progressing through his CM theory books, Aidan began composing music in the fall of 2016. He made his compositional debut in the Spring of 2017 with his piano sonata, Lunar Suite.  He quickly followed that performance up with the debut of his wind ensemble piece, A Blessed Touch. Aidan was honored to conduct the Colina Middle School Band in that performance.  A year after he began composing, he started formal classical composition studies with Brett Banducci. In addition to his debuted pieces, he has composed works for Big Band, Chamber Music Ensembles, Symphony, String Orchestra and Jazz combo. Aidan is grateful to his musical mentors Mike Gangemi, Anne Freuhling, Nina Kelly, Mike Fortunato, and Ralph Ignazzio for all of their guidance and encouragement. Aside from his various musical endeavors, Aidan is a straight-A honors student who enjoys studying economics and fencing.
